Why Hygiene Is Important
By: Sir Jay Patel
Staff Writer
Oxford- William is a young man with his whole life ahead of him. William has worked hard and plans to become a knight to serve King George. Sadly, in the town of Yorkshire where William lives, the black plague has been spreading like wildfire. William, who is just a young man is unaware of hygiene and how it could save his life. He did not bathe, or wash his hands before every meal. In only five days William becomes sick. His loving parents try everything to heal him. They tried bathing him in vinegar and rosewater, feeding him no meats and cheeses, and even tried calling a plague doctor. Sadly, these efforts were to no avail. Williams parents, also oblivious soon contracted the plague from William for the same reason he did. This is why hygiene is necessary and should be enforced to keep people healthy and disease free.
An idea created by the greek scientist Hippocrates 1700 years ago, hygiene is keeping yourself clean. According to research, diseases are not spread by gods or witchcraft but naturally. By not being clean, the disease will somehow seep into your being and cause you harm. By washing yourself you will rid yourself of the disease on the outside, therefore protecting you. In order to be safe from the Black Death, you must bathe at least once a day and wash your body with soap. It is also important to get plenty of rest, so your body is energized enough to fight diseases.
Some people may believe that they don’t need to bathe or wash themselves and they will just be fine. This is not true because if the disease is transferred onto your skin it will seep into your being and infect you. Once you are infected there is only so much you can do. From then on it is an almost certain death sentence. People may also think it is too time consuming to get water from the river and to buy some soap. All you have to do buy a bar of soap and go to the river once a day to get the water. If you think about it is that really too much to ask to save someones life.
If people don’t keep themselves clean terrible things will almost surely happen. As soon as one member of a family gets sick others will unknowingly get infected. Soon people who are unknowingly carrying the disease will unconsciously spread it. Soon people will panic and start to blame each other. Then the fighting will begin. It will only be a matter of time before people will be pitted against each other. Anarchy will become predominant and sweep the nation. Before you know it utter chaos will become a part of daily life. People may not even be able to venture out of their homes, without having to fend for themselves
If people practice hygiene then, the chances of the disease spreading will be reduced greatly. People could now focus on their daily lives instead of having to worry about getting infected. Eventually the disease will have no one to catch on to and soon it will go away. Now that people will not have to live in fear, they will not fight each other. The economy will grow with renewed peace, and people could now work without distractions. Now if you care about the lives of millions and you want to live a better life than you will practice hygiene.
By: Sir Alucard Staff Writer Clairmont-Jousting has been a popular sport among the knights and nobles, but most people don’t pay close attention to the rules, specifically the seemingly inconsequential armor specifications. Having unsafe armor creates a dangerous environment for the participants, so knights should always remember to follow those requirements.
One of those rules requires armor to not have any hole through which a one and one half inch dowel can fit. Many knights ignore this rule because it would be too expensive to purchase a new suit of armor. Also, a replacement part may be cheap enough, but most knights prefer to have one solid suit, because the styles of two different armor smiths may not match, which makes the knight look tacky. As everyone knows, knights hate to look bad, whether or not there is an audience. But, one hole could be a fatal mistake.
Just last week, a dear friend of mine, Sir Lio of Swaziland, came to a tournament to joust. Sir Lio was a very promising knight, and his skill was well known. He was a newlywed, married to Lady Cherrapunji of Djibouti one and a half moons ago. His fatal flaw, though, was his taste in fancy armor. The one particular suit that he decided to wear to that tournament had ornate designs and engravings. One such hole was one inch and three fourths large. I’m not sure what my friend did, but karma sure had it in for him that day. Sir Lio took a lance straight through the hole in his armor, and it punctured his gut. He was carried off the tournament grounds on horseback, his tear eyed wife running after him. Fortunately, he was a- pardon any offensive language- quite pudgy man, and the lance tip did not puncture any of his vital organs.
Another such rule that has been flaunted quite often is the armor thickness requirement. Some more conservative knights, so to speak, purchase suits of armor that are much too thin and flimsy, but are cheap. These knights usually end up wounded because lances can easily puncture the armor, and can then rupture an in
Who Really Invented Checkers?
Sir Brendan Ward Staff Writer
-Previously in this newspaper, an article was published concerning the creation of a new “entertainment craze” that is sweeping the country. However, between the writing of that article and now, about half a fortnight, many concerns have arisen on who exactly came up with this game. After a recent dig on the most recent crusade, it has been discovered that there are versions of many similar games that are believed to date back to at least 3000 B.C. This sparks the question; did a lowly old farmer REALLY invent this game? To start, the games both involve the same basic mechanic, where one player's pieces ‘jump’ over the others to remove them from the game board. The boards are similar too. This couldn’t have been tomb robbers, as works from great greek philosophers and poets such as Plato and Homer reference the Egyptian board game ‘petteia.’ This evidences that this game has been around LONG before today. For it to have been around to be refined to the point of being able to achieve widespread fame.\ Now, some may be saying “Well, y’know what they say; great minds think alike.” Well, on a recent interview with the supposed creator of the new game, it was found he had many egyptian relics and artifacts, and unusually high amount for a man of his income. However this is just speculation, and no evidence has been gathered to show any criminal ties. This is absolutely unacceptable, we cannot allow blatant imposters such as this to claim fame in society. People should know their facts instead of just jumping onto huge bandwagons while the rug is swiftly pulled out from under their blindfolded selves. If we choose to live in a society like this we may end up in a world where people will blindly argue a point to no end based off of what they heard from their uncle’s cousin’s mail man’s daughter. We may end up in a world where anyone can claim fame just by saying they are famous, and no one will bother to see if they are or not. We cannot live in a world like that, we need to get to the bottom of this case and figure out who is right and who is wrong. We need to strengthen our morales and bring justice back to the land. We cannot allow a world like that to happen.
Smoking Kills
By: Sir Noah Dolinko
Staff Writer
¥orkshire-Smoking is a bad thing that no one should do. Just last moon, one boy named jay died due to smoking too much tobacco. The effects of tobacco are sometimes death! Jay had been smoking every moon since he was a young squire. His first time trying was when his knight gave him a taste of it. His family has been extremely sad because of jay’s death. Jays brother shares his feeling “I will bring death to the knight that dare gave my brother some tobacco” then I will make sure that no one will use it again. It has been known that tobacco has been used to help jousters win their battles, although it causes death. Using this drug is not only a disgrace to the user but also to the knights. This is why no one should ever use tobacco.
Tobacco is a drug that causes damage to the brain and also can cause death. Although, knights who use tobacco are successful because the effects of tobacco short term are that it increases your abilities and allows you to be more focused. Except that the long-term effects far outweigh the short-term gain. In the long run smoking tobacco will lead to serious and fatal consequences. There is no need to risk losing you're life over a small battle of jousting.
Some people believe that using tobacco is okay and will not hurt you. Now this may be true for some people but most people will end up with severe damage to their body. the first time you use tobacco it can cause you to become addicted to it. However for some people they will not get addicted right away but once you use tobacco you're prone to use it more and more and more and that will cause you to eventually become addicted and you won't be able to stop. Tobacco will eventually become a necessity and you won't be able to stop yourself from using it. Also if anyone finds out you'll be disqualified from jousting tournaments and be banished from England. Also giving up you knight status and won't ever be able to live in the town of which you were from. In some extreme cases like giving tobacco to others or selling it you can be punished with death. The bottom line is never do tobacco and you will stay healthy and live a good life.
In conclusion tobacco is a drug that causes damage to the brain and should never be used when jousting. You should never cheat and keep your honor when in a joust. If you're caught with tobacco you can be exiled from the England and or killed. If you stay away from tobacco chances are you live a very successful life and be very good stay honest and always be careful to not even try tobacco. You will regret it I promise
