City Business
This month, the Court Circular has received many business reports from the City of London Livery Companies. The Worshipful Company of Pepperers reports that the majority of spices have been imported from Oriental countries, including the Empire of the Great Ming in China and the Reddy Kingdom in India. These spices have recently increased in price from 5 pence per gram to 7 pence per gram, due to the immense cost of transporting the spices to England. Also, a new luxury tax has been enacted, so tax on these goods is now a full penny. The Pepperers’ weights and measures staff reports that the so-called “Imperial” measurements have been banned and only the metric measurements shall be used for all transactions. The Worshipful Company of Drapers also reports that cloth from the Orient has gone up in price from 6 pence per square meter to 8 pence per square meter. The Worshipful Company of Fishmongers has put out a warning against all illegal fishmongers’ shops; these shops operate without Royal Charter and are unlicensed; fish purchased from these shops may be contaminated and poisonous. A new and renewed Royal Charter has recently been given to the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, which has supplied the Royal Jeweller for His Majesty The King for over 50 years, and relocated them to a new Guild Hall in London. The Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors has also reported an increase in thread prices. The Worshipful Company of Vintners reports that wine from French grapes is to be consumed less than English wine in order to promote national unity and avoid threats from France, despite His Majesty’s French relatives. Overall, the prices of imported goods is increasing, and other imported goods are to be consumed less.
